February News         February 19, 2015

Hi All!

Brrrrrrrr does MI stand for Minnesota?  It sure feels like it!!!  This weather certainly makes one want to hibernate or snuggle in and stitch like crazy.

WEATHER AND STORE CLOSINGS

First of all, regarding our weather and how it affects the store being closed...   the store will be closed if Birmingham or Holly Schools are closed due to hazardous road conditions, i.e. very icy roads or heavy snow.   If schools are closed for any other reasons, such as frigid temperatures, the store will be open as that does not affect our teachers' abilities to drive in for classes.

When in doubt about a class going forward simply call the shop after 8:00 a.m. and a recorded message will let you know if the shop is closed.

MY FAVORITE FINDS AT THE TNNA PHOENIX TRADE SHOW
Access Commodities' GARNITURES are the best!!!!! The Garnitures offer a wide selection of trims that can be used to embellish your needlepoint projects.  There are various fine laces, fine twisted leathers, rick rack (remember that term from the past, ladies?!) in a variety of colors.  I am so impressed with the quality of theses Garnitures.  Check them out when you are in the shop.

And speaking of what else is new from the Phoenix Trade Show, we have…

NEW THREADS

  • We are now carrying BURMILANA thread in all the animal colors.  If this is a new thread for you it is a must try-out, luxurious, wool/acrylic blend.
  • ENTICE by Rainbow Gallery is a rayon/metallic blend fiber. This was a new thread featured at the Phoenix Trade Show this past January.  It comes in 23 bright, sparkly colors for 18 mesh canvas.

NEW ACCESSORIES

  • Puffin Company’s Notions Niches  - these smooth cherry wood boxes are meant to house scissors, needles, beads etc. They are fleece lined and have a VERY STRONG magnetic closure. Each case comes adorned with one of Puffin Company's signature, metal, sculptural designs.

  • Super Bright LED lamp is a new portable, extremely bright, fold-up light. It has 3 easy touch brightness settings and sells for $17.00!

NEW CANVASES

  • We have been receiving new canvases weekly from the Phoenix Market!!!   Today we received canvases from our newest vendor, SM Designs.  Based in New York, this company offers wonderful geometric designs and a lot of Judaic canvases as well.

NEW BOOKS

Desert Island Stitches, Vol. I, by Carole H. Lake & Michael E. Boren.  This is a lovely, portable book that helps the stitcher tackle the issue of dealing with small, design areas.

Just Stitches I Use by Julia Snyder.  This is Julia's latest book that offers great advice on where to use various stitches. The book offers old & new stitch designs and stitch techniques.

Come on by and check out all of the new things we have to offer as we will be continuously receiving new stitching items through May.

JUNE McKNIGHT SPECIALTY CLASS UPDATE

June has just completed stitching our next class project offering!  The stitched canvas will arrive at the shop next week and will be on display for 1 week before I send it off to be finished.

This class will be posted on-line next week for enrollment, and until our piece arrives, here are a few clues to our mystery project… June says: “This is a piece full of lovely surprises and offers a lot of learning experiences."  The design is approximately 10"x12" and is painted on 13 mesh canvas, wooo hooo, for faster stitching!

The class will be a 2 day course offered June 5th & 6th.  12 seats will be available.

More information and the unveiling is coming soon, so stay tuned.

 March 1, 2014
Hi everyone...

As we are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of Spring, I have some exciting news about upcoming events for you to schedule on your calendars...

 VISITING TEACHER ANNOUNCEMENT

JUNE MCKNIGHT will be BACK IN-HOUSE Friday, August 8th and Saturday, August 9th!

As many of you already know, June is an author, teacher and stitcher extraordinaire.  She was our wickedly wonderful witch leading us through our stitching and embellishing "Boo Kitty" class.  And last spring June was the headmistress at our Mackinac Island retreat, where her students enjoyed her stitching instructions on Charley Harper's "Upside Downside" and a beautiful limoge box that featured a new design of the Grand Hotel porch.

This year’s class with June will feature a new, floral design by Needle Deeva. This piece is a stunning eye catcher and has already drawn a lot of interest. While the class date and the canvas design have been selected, we are still working out all the specific details for the entire class package.  Stay tuned as more information for registration will follow.

TRUNK SHOWS

During the month of March we have 3 trunk shows featured in our shop.  These shows will also be available at our boutique at the NAN Assembly.

3)  And Very Specially....... JP DESIGNS!  This is truly a special event as this is the first time JP has honored a trunk show request!   Coming the week of March 17th

Remember all trunk show canvases will be 10% off the marked price.

BOOK BONANZA

1) SECRETS   by June McKnight
This wonderful book shares a wealth of information ("secrets") that June has gathered over the decades of her involvement in the needlework industry.  As an example, June gives advice on how to choose that" special"," well-painted" canvas and how to avoid creative pitfalls.  As a bonus, all copies in the store have been autographed by June.

2) THREADS: A Needle Necessity  by Jane Evans & Liv Weiss
This new volume gives information on thread substitutions, the number of ply to use for various threads on different canvas meshes, whether a thread is easy to work with or slippery and much more!

3) PAINTED CANVAS EMBELLISHMENTS  by Carole Lake & Michael Boren

Do you already have the most fabulously painted canvas ever and all you need are some ideas for embellishments?

RECENT ARRIVALS

The results of my buying spree at the January Winter TNNA Trade Show in San Deigo have started arriving at the store.  I purchased over 100 canvases from some 25 designers – some of whom are new to The Needleworks.  If you’re looking for that next project and want something quick, there is a fresh selection for you to choose from.  Please stop by the store and feel free to have us point out all of these new, cute and amazing canvases.

NEWS FROM MACKINAC ISLAND!

Hello everyone!

Our Mackinac Island stitching retreat was a blast! First of all, the weather behaved! It was sunny and spring-like each day. Accommodations at the Grand Hotel were absolutely lovely and the food was wonderful. The stitching classroom that was provided for our group was perfectly cozy. Importantly, it was very well lit and the large windows allowed us a beautiful view of the Grand Hotel grounds as well. June McKnight passed along a wealth of stitching information and techniques which we learned while having a lot of fun at the same time.

In class, June not only shared her vast knowledge of stitching, but also her patience, preparedness and wit. The canvas for both classes had a finished model that was lovingly and exquisitely stitched by June herself making them one of a kind. It is truly a treat to be a student in any class she teaches.

KUDOS and MANY THANKS June for an outstanding teaching job in both of your classes! Love you lots !!!!

You can see photos of the retreat on our Facebook page.

TRUNK SHOW - CHARLIE HARPER
We brought back the very extensive Charley Harper trunk show from Mackinac Island to share with our clientele. This trunk show will be in our shop through the 3rd week of May. We can all thank both Mrs. Amelia Musser and her daughter, Mimi Cunningham, (owners of the Grand Hotel) for inspiring me to arrange for this spectacular show as both are fans of Charley Harper's work.

In their honor, we selected a Charley Harper poster to be one of our class canvases. This work of art entitled "Upside/Downside" is a Charley Harper piece newly translated to the painted canvas for us, thanks to Treglown Designs! We truly appreciate the Treglowns for their time and effort to
help make this event a special one.

MINI TRUNK SHOW - JULIA'S HINGED BOXES
Further thanks goes to Julia's Designs for their special effort and talent in creating a brand new limoge box for our special event as well. Julia, you outdid yourself this time! This view of the Grand Hotel porch (longest in the world), as presented on the limoge box, is stunning!

We are now also featuring a MINI TRUNK show of Julia's line of canvases for hinged boxes.

Both of these special 1st edition canvases are now available exclusively from our store for a limited time. Stitch guides and thread kits are also available. Call or email to reserve yours.

SUMMER HAPPENINGS
As most of you already know our classes with Kathy Stolpin will be on hiatus  for the summer months. Even though Kathy will be enjoying her summer vacation, she will offer 3 of her traditional "all day stitch-in sessions" during the summer. Further, Kathy will be available for private lessons as well. Sign-up begins May 15th.

All Day sessions run from 10:00am - 3:00pm with a lunch included. Fee is $60.00 per session. A deposit is required at time of registration. All Day Sessions are as follows:

June 20th, Thursday
July 17th, Wednesday
August 21st, Wednesday

Private lesson dates:
June 18th, 19th, 21st and 22nd
July 16th, 18th, 19th and 20th
August 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th

CINDY'S AND LINDA'S SUMMER HAPPENINGS
PLEASE NOTE that our lovely and talented staff, Cindy Murphy and Linda Watkins, will continue their drop-in classes throughout the summer months.

Tuesdays 1:00-3:00 with Cindy
Wednesdays 1:00-3:00 with Linda
Fridays 10:00-12:00 with Cindy

STORE SUMMER HOURS !
Effective June 10th our store hours are as follows:

Tuesday - Friday 10:00-4:00
Saturday 10:00-2:00
Sunday and Monday - Closed

As always, I am so conflicted at this time of the year. While I am ecstatic for summer to be here, I will miss seeing you all on a regular basis. I wish everyone a happy, healthy and fun summer. AND... HAPPY STITCHING as well!

Warmly,
Francine

(248) 645-1180

P.S. Last but NOT LEAST... a HUGE THANK YOU to the wonderful, hard-working group of people that helped make our Mackinac Island venture so successful. It has been written that it takes "a village to raise a child" and I know it takes a great support group to make a successful event. My "great group" consists of the following cast of characters, whom I adore: my husband Rick, staff members Kathy Stolpin, Cindy Murphy and Linda Watkins and special friends Susan & Elliot Zeltzer! Mmmmmmwwwaaahhh You're the BEST!
